I bet* you can’t write without
succumbing* to metaphor.
Some metaphors are tricky* and fly by* unnoticed. They get away with it* because heads-up* words like “like” are optional, and because well-worn* metaphors have been sneaking up,* passing under the radar*, and blending into the landscape* forever.* Sometimes we literally* underscore* our oblivion by tacking on* “literally.”
I like metaphors. They routinely* rescue writers* from cranking out* and readers from having to wade through* painful* tripe.*
