the next door-to-door seller
I had all but decided that door-to-door selling had deteriorated into the exclusive domain of annoying hucksters ... when a highly skilled seller showed up on my doorstep yesterday afternoon.
His manner was natural, likable. He was neat and groomed. Instead of wasting my time with would-be endearing drivel, he got right to the point. He showed just the right amount of confidence — not too much, which can be off-putting. He answered questions clearly. He knew when to nudge, and he knew when to back off.
Other salespeople who come to my door — I get quite a few — would do well to sit at his feet and learn.
The services for sale were dog sitting, dog walking, and yard clean-up for dog owners. I love dogs, but am currently dogless. Otherwise, I’d have bought on the spot.
Did I mention? This adept salesman is 7½ years old.
